Created a 27" x 40" print of a movie poster for the 2015 film, Mad Max: Fury Road.
My design process began...
with (very) extensive film research –
no problem as it’s a favorite!
I continued my process with image collection, typeface experimentation, thumbnail sketches, iterations, and ultimately polishing the final poster.
Mood Board
The colors of the poster are similar to the colors seen in the film’s desolate wastelands of orange desert sand storms and smokey blue polluted skies.
Steampunk motifs used include nuts and bolts, chains, moving gears, fire, smoke, and busted tires.

Inspiration
I was inspired by Art Nouveau artist, Alphonse Mucha – blending his style with the film’s steam punk genre to reflect its post-apocalyptic universe.
The film’s leading lady, Furiosa, stood out even moreso than the film’s namesake, Mad Max, because of her significant involvement with freeing the women slaves.
I wanted to emphasize her in a similar way as Mucha did with his muses, and despite the title Mad Max across the top of the poster, Furiosa is the character that dominates visually.
Typefaces
I explored a variety of typefaces stylized with a grunge effect to reflect the film’s wasteland narrative.
However, ultimately landed on using a font resembling Art Nouveau style to maintain the juxtaposition of hard and soft elements.

Iterations
Design challenges included creating steampunk imagery on a still image, since the genre is known for its shifting gears and moving mechanical parts.
I played around with size, color, and depth to ultimately create the final poster.
